Water Pump Cycling
Water Pump Cycling in an RV
An RV water pump should run when water is being used and stop after pressure builds.
If it pulses constantly, runs randomly, or cycles when no faucet is open, the pump is telling you something changed in the water system.
The cause may be simple, but it should not be ignored because hidden leaks can start small.
Common Signs
- Pump pulses while using water
- Pump runs for a second with no faucet open
- Pump never fully shuts off
- Pump sounds louder than normal
- Water pressure surges
- Pump cycles after city water use
- Air spits from faucets
Normal Pump Behavior
Some pulsing during low-flow use can be normal depending on the pump and fixture.
But random cycling when no water is being used usually means pressure is dropping somewhere.
That pressure drop can come from a leak, check valve, air, or internal pump issue.
Check for Leaks First
I would look under sinks, near the water heater, around the toilet, near the pump, and in storage bays.
A small drip can make the pump cycle occasionally.
Do not assume the pump is bad until hidden leaks are ruled out.
City Water and Check Valve Issues
After using city water, some RVs develop check valve problems that affect pump behavior.
A leaking check valve can allow pressure to bleed back or water to move where it should not.
If pump cycling started after connecting to campground water, that clue matters.
Air in the System
Air trapped in the lines can cause sputtering and uneven pump operation.
Opening faucets and allowing the system to purge air may help after filling the fresh tank or working on plumbing.
Restrictions and Strainers
Pump strainers, filters, kinked lines, or partially closed valves can change pump sound and flow.
A restricted inlet can make the pump work harder and sound different.
Simple restrictions should be checked before replacing the pump.
When To Stop
If the pump runs when no water is being used and you cannot find the cause, turn it off when leaving the RV.
A hidden leak with the pump left on can cause serious water damage.
