Roof Leak or Water Stain
A water stain inside an RV does not always mean the leak is directly above the stain.
Water can travel along roof structure, ceiling panels, wiring paths, vents, and trim before it finally appears inside.
That is why roof leak troubleshooting needs patience. The visible stain is only the clue, not always the source.
Common Signs
- Brown ceiling stain
- Soft ceiling panel
- Water near a light fixture
- Water after rain
- Water after washing the RV
- Stain near roof vents or AC
- Water near slide rooms
- Musty smell
Start With Recent Weather
I would first ask when the water appeared. Rain, washing the RV, driving in heavy weather, or using the air conditioner can point in different directions.
If water appears only when the AC runs, condensation or an AC gasket may be involved.
If it appears after rain, roof penetrations and seams become more likely.
Roof Seals and Penetrations
RV roofs have many potential entry points: vents, skylights, antennas, solar mounts, ladder mounts, seams, and trim.
Sealant can crack, lift, or separate over time.
Small sealant gaps can allow water in even when the roof looks mostly fine from the ground.
AC Gasket Clues
A rooftop AC uses a gasket between the unit and the roof opening. If that gasket loses compression or the area does not drain properly, water can enter around the opening.
Interior dripping near the AC should be taken seriously.
It may be condensation, but it may also be water intrusion.
Slide Seals
Slide rooms add another leak path. Water can enter through slide seals, toppers, trim, or improper leveling.
Sometimes the leak appears only when the slide is extended, or only when wind pushes rain against one side of the RV.
Water Travels
One of the hardest parts is that water may enter in one place and show up somewhere else.
That is why I would not seal only the visible stain area. I would inspect uphill and around nearby roof penetrations.
When To Stop
If the ceiling is soft, water is near electrical fixtures, or the leak is active, stop and protect the RV from further water entry.
Roof work and structural water damage often justify qualified inspection.
